OAS Family News 10/24/25

My Fellow Lions,

Great week here at OAS! One of the most exciting parts of our literacy block this year has been watching our youngest learners grow as readers through UFLI (University of Florida Literacy Institute) instruction. UFLI lessons are explicit, systematic, and engaging, providing students with the foundational phonics skills that support fluent, confident reading.

Teachers use clear routines and visual cues to model and reinforce phonetic rules, while students practice blending, decoding, and spelling through interactive activities. Throughout each lesson, teachers collect in-the-moment data to guide reteaching and ensure every student has the support needed to access grade-level reading tasks.

Most importantly, students are developing a sense of belonging and agency—working together, celebrating small wins, and proudly applying their growing skills during reading and writing time.

Important News

  • Costume Parade - Friday, October 31, 2025 9:15 am Students will come to school in their costumes!  Please have students wear their costumes over their regular clothes and bring a labeled bag for their costumes. (It's a long day to stay in your costume)

  • All guests must stay outside for the duration of the parade and will not be allowed in the school after the parade for the safety and security of the children.

  • We ask that families line up on the front lawn or the back field  of the school to get a great view of  children marching by. Parking will be limited so arrive early - keeping in mind that you might have to park further away and walk.  Please remember not to park in any bus or fire lanes.

  • The parade will exit the school out Door 4 (where students enter for morning drop off, cross Orange Ave to visit our neighbors outside at Civita Care Center, cross back over via crosswalk, go across front of school, then  on the sidewalk by the bus loop, across the blacktop in the back of the school and enter through the B wing (grade 4) back door.

  • Children must have a costume appropriate for elementary school aged children. Gory/violent images are not good for our little ones.

    • No props, toy weapons, face masks, or make-up, etc., are allowed.

  • *Should there be inclement weather that morning, the parade will be held indoors.  In that case we will only have enough space for all staff and students. Any family who does not wish their child to participate should contact the teacher in advance so that we may make appropriate arrangements.

  • Food/Candy for Celebrations  - with our annual costume parade at the end of the month,, just a reminder that MPS Elementary schools have a “no food” policy in accordance to the MPS Student Handbook.  This policy keeps students safe due to allergy concerns. This includes candy and other food treats. Any candy sent to school will be returned home and not distributed.

  • School Start time - Please keep in mind that the official start time  of the school is 8:40 am. Often as a courtesy and convenience for families, we continue to allow students to enter door 4 through drop off loop after this time if staff is available. Should you arrive after 8:40, students may be marked absent if they do not stop at the greeter station for a tardy slip.

  • International night - Book Your Flight to International Night! Sign up to attend using this form. Register today so that your student will receive a special souvenir boarding pass! If you have questions or want to volunteer, you can email Mrs. Lennon mlennon@milforded.org.

  • Veterans Day - As Veterans Day approaches, we are excited to celebrate our veterans. Orange Avenue wants to invite veterans of all backgrounds into our school.  If you are a veteran or know anyone (family member, neighbor, friend, etc) that would be able to come into our school to visit a student’s classroom, please let us know. To be more flexible we are asking that you sign up using the Google Form  We will then have the classroom teacher reach out to coordinate times that work best for their classroom.

  • MPS 2030 - One more opportunity to join us for an MPS Vision 2030 session to share your input on 5-year goals — Oct. 28 at Foran (7 p.m.). More info and registration can be found here.
