OAS Family News 11/21/25

My Fellow Lions,

A great week here at OAS. Highlight of the week was seeing many classes moving into Module 2 of our Bookworms literacy program. We are continuing our schoolwide implementation of Bookworms, an essential part of our comprehensive literacy approach alongside UFLI phonics and Heggerty phonemic awareness. While UFLI and Heggerty build strong foundational decoding skills, Bookworms supports the remaining components of high-quality literacy instruction—fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Through Bookworms, students engage in shared reading, where teachers read aloud with students using rich, grade-level texts. Classes revisit the same text multiple times, each reading deepening understanding by highlighting elements such as character development, vocabulary, author’s purpose, and text structure. This consistent structure not only strengthens essential reading skills but also nurtures curiosity, confidence, and a genuine love for reading.

We are excited to continue this work again this year and to watch students grow as thoughtful, joyful readers through daily opportunities to explore diverse stories and meaningful content.

Important News

  • MPS 2030 - Milford Public Schools will be developing five-year goals in the near future. We recently held in-person MPS Vision 2030 forums to gather feedback for consideration in developing these goals, and now we’re inviting current students, staff, and parents/guardians to share their perspectives through this survey, which will be open until December 2. Please answer the questions in the survey to help guide the future of Milford Public Schools.
  • New Progress Report- Coming in December.  Our updated K-5 progress report (report card) helps families see how students are growing as learners across all subjects.  Because the new progress report indicators reflect end-of-year learning goals, it will be completely normal for students to still be “progressing” throughout the year as they continue building skills and confidence.  The caregiver guide can be found here.
